Michael is the Chauncey post-doctoral fellow at Yale University. His research integrates complex motives into rational theories of world politics using game theory, elite survey experiments with real-world intelligence analysts, and archival research. Since motives are central to interstate interactions yet rarely theorized in a realistic way, he has used his framework to explain puzzling aspects of power transitions (International Organization R&R), crisis diplomacy (Journal of Politics R&R), and technology and violence (Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Conflict Resolution). He graduated with a Ph.D. in Political Science from George Washington University in May 2018.
