I am a 4th PhD student interested in studying IR. My research tends to approach International Relations phenomena from the perspective of the actual participants and attempt to understand how International Society is (re)created through the habits, practices and utterances of these participants. I have used this form of analysis to attempt to explain the execution of colonial wars, and well as the conduct of pre-WWI diplomacy.
My dissertation focuses on the origins and purposes of the diplomatic rituals which states practice. I conceptualize ritual as a continuum running from traditional to innovative. Examples of ritual include the recalling of ambassadors, summit meetings, and public and ceremonial performances.
