Professor Bowie's research focuses on comparative political economy, development, and Southeast Asia.
He was an official international election observer in Palu, Central Sulawesi, during the June 7, 1999, national election in Indonesia. He is a frequent radio commentator on political developments in Indonesia (NPR, CBC Radio-Canada, Voice of America, BBC World Service).

Dr. Bowie's current research focuses on the political and economic role of decentralized sub-national governments (those of provinces, districts, etc.) in Southeast Asia with a particular focus on Vietnam and Indonesia.

He is author of The Politics of Open Economies: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand (with Danny Unger), and Crossing the Industrial Divide: State, Society, and the Politics of Economic Transformation in Malaysia and of articles and chapters on state-sponsored economic development in Southeast Asia. He has also published on governance and development in the developing world.
