Elena's research interests include armed conflict, atrocity prevention, and nuclear non-proliferation. Her previous research focused on military intervention in Libya and mass atrocity in Latin America. Prior to her time at George Washington, she served as a victim advocate in a district attorney's office, focusing on violent crime. She has her B.A. in Political Science and Spanish from the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon.
